Seriously... what's everyone's sci-fi favorites? Either in novels, movies or artists - I'm easy.

Mine in authors right now are anything by Lois MacMasters Bujold, in her Vorkosigan series. No serious favorites in movies right now.

Usually prefer short story collections from the golden age, particularly space operas. First visual sci-fi I remember watching was the tv show "Men into Space" in 1959. Gerry Anderson's "Fireball XL5" in '62 was another big influence. "The Outer Limits" in '63 had some wonderful alien make-ups. Have been a Star Trek fan since '66. Usually try to check out any sci-fi series or film. Don't have cable, so it does make things difficult.

Authors... I have read a bunch but by and Large my favorite is still Robert A Heinlein.

There isn't much out in movies right now... well unless you count SW:episode 2..
but strangely enough this past year I have gotten in to Andromeda on TV. I would love a 3d model of that ship but I haven't seen one online.
However I seriously wonder if it is really based on an idea from Gene Roddenberry. Seems much more complex or multi layered than anything else he came up with.

I agree I enjoy Andromeda myself, I'm looking foward to seeing some StarTrek sections added to the Sci-Fi Section FreeStuff. I would also love to see a Star Wars section someday as well.

Oh, definately.... I'd forgotten about a lot of the old classic collections. And the novels - EE. Doc Smith's Lensman series, Dumarest of Terra.... now that you reminded me, I'm going to have to dig out my Dumarest novels and reread them. Space opera was a lot of fun, and the best holds it's own against a lot of stuff I see written today.
I love the 1st Generation StarTrek novels also. NextGen novels leave me cold.

Andromeda is cool. I think it was based on a concept by Roddenberry, but his death left the producers and writers free to explore more depth than he would have perhaps. In series, there's also Witchblade, but that's more comic fantasy than sci-fi to me.

Thanks Ghost. I'd heard rumours of a third season hence the question marks, but I wasn't sure. That's good news because I thoroughly enjoy that series, it's just wacky enough to appeal to me. :)

Novels
Dream Park books - Larry Niven
Phule's Company books - Robert Asprin
Honor Harrington Books - David Weber

TV
Babylon 5
Star Trek - Original Series only
Blake's 7
Doctor Who
Farscape
Andromeda

Don't like Asimov's books - fpund them long winded.
Also dislike the Dune Novels - They started off mediocre and got progressively worse.

Dislike intensely - Star Trek TNG, DS9 & Voyager - Too politically correct - Badly written, but not badly acted, tended to ignore original series continuity - also far too much Technobabble.
X-Files - Poorly written, environmentally friendly (recycling scripts - seem to have run out of ideas half way thru season 1), Bad acting (by duchovny & anderson, but mostly duchovny), winning undeserved awards.

Also having watched DS9 & Babylon 5, DS9 comes across as a poor quality copy of Babylon 5.

All time favorite Novel : The Andromeda Strain - Michael Crichhton (and still the only good book he has ever written)

Favorite Author: Herbert George Wells

Favorite Movies: Alien - Bladerunner

Favorite Spoof: Galaxy Quest

Favorite TV: Outer Limits - Star Trek

I don't get TV where I live now and don't have cable so I now nothing of most of the TV shows you guys are mentioning.

Hey there, IB! Yep, I've come to infest this place, too. There's no escaping me these days.;)

Has anyone ever seen a book called "Barlowe's Guide to Extraterrestrials" by Wayne Douglas Barlow? Barlow is an incredible artist, and the book consists of his paintings of several classic sci-fi story aliens. An Overlord from Clarke's "Childhood's End", Puppeteer from Niven's "Ringworld", stuff like that. He does amazing work.

I may even get ambitious and try modeling one of them some day and make a Poser figure of it.

Cool stuff.:)
