Figured it might be interesting to start a thread of recommended movies. The idea is to recommend movies that are NOT the common, massively-promoted flicks that are in the local multiplex, but older or more obscure films that warrant extra attention.
"Burn!" (1969) - dir. Gillo Pontecorvo, starring Marlon Brando. Based on the true story of a slave revolt on the island of Quemada and it's aftermath. Unfortunately never released on DVD to the best of my knowledge. My favourite Brando role next to Jor-El
"Bridge on the River Kwai" (1957) - dir. David Lean. Okay, so it's not obscure, but I expect many of our younger members haven't seen this one. And they should.
"Naked Lunch" (1991) - dir. David Cronenberg. The most surreal movie I've ever seen. You feel stoned after watching it.
"The Black Hole" (1979) - dir. Gary Nelson. The only Disney movie to have any kind of deep psychology, and the only one to start out a space adventure and end as an allegorical representation of Dante's Inferno. Get past the 70's effects and this is a GREAT movie. Imagine a remake written by William Goldman and directed by David Fincher.
"The Day the Earth Stood Still" (1951) - dir. Robert Wise. This should be required viewing for everyone on the planet. The greatest science fiction film ever made, bar none. If you haven't seen this one, you need to go rent it. Now. _________________ Jim Harnock - ODS

Here's some of my favorites.
Tower of London (1939 version)- Starring Basil Rathbone, Boris Karloff, and a youthfull Vincent Price. It's a fairly accurate account of the ambitious rise of Richard III, the most blood thirsty and insane king in all English history. Richard kept a case full of dolls representing all the people in line to the thrown ahead of him. Each time he killed to advance to the throne, her would burn the dolls representing his victims. The medievil battle scene is excellent for a black and white production. It's a much better movie than the 1960 version (also featuring Vincent Price).
The Bed Sitting Room (late 60's) A surreal comedy based on a post nuclear world where survivors mutate into furnature and buildings. It stars Spike Millikan.
Astro Zombies- (late 60's) starring John Carradine and a no star cast. An evil scientest creates an artificial space man monster while being stalked by U.S. and Mexican secret agents. The best scenes include the monster powering its solar cell on its forehead with a flash light, and a large breasted woman strapped to a lab table.
The Masque of the Red Death (mid 1960's) Vincent Price plays a medievil Italian prince who dabbles in Satanism. This is my all time favorite horror movie. It's a good story with almost no blood, guts or gore.
Wizards (1977) Ralph Bakshi's animated classic. It's the story of a long standing feud between two brothers with wizard powers living thousands of years in the future after a nuclear war started by terrorists. Black Wolf, the evil brother, masters 20th century technology and Nazi imagery to inspire his demon and mutant army. Avatar, the good wizard, has only his wits and his friends Elinor, Wee Hawk, and Peace the robot to combat his brother. Marvel artists Jim Starlin and Mike
Ploog worked on the movie. (Don't give away the ending if you've seen this movie.)

Personally, No DVD collection would be complete without the following flicks added:
Killer Klowns from Outer Space - B-Movie for sure, about alien clowns coming to earth in their big-Top Tent spaceship, and cocooning earth's inhabitants in giant candy floss cocoons.
Chopper Chicks in Zombietown - Director: Dan Hoskins - Big bad Rox (Catherine Carlen) and her Cycle Sluts (Jamie Rose, Kristina Loggia) roar into a town where a mad scientist makes the living dead
The Outsiders - D: Francis Ford Copolla, based on the novel by S.E. Hinton. 1983. A teen growing up on the wrong side of the tracks tells this story of friendship, family, and overcoming life's obstacles.
Staring Emlio Estevez, Tom Cruise, Rob Lowe and Leif Garret in their first film roles.
Also stars Patrick Swayze, C. Thomas Howel, Ralph Machio, Matt Dillon and Diane Lane.
Truly a memorable movie, with music by Stevie Wonder.
John Carpenter's "They Live" watch it and you will start squinting at signs trying to see the hidden messages
"Gattaca" the scariest "Non horror" movie I ever saw the patriot act has run amuck, where genetic testing and DNA testing becomes a cast system
after seeing those and being totaly creeped out
any danny kay movie especialy "the court jester"

Cast A Deadly Spell (HBO) - an interesting blend of genres and ideas that was good enough to inspire a lousy sequel (comparatively) and remains high on my personal favorites list.

For me, "The Yakuza", A 1975 film directed by Sydney Pollack, starring Robert Mitchum, Ken Takakura and Brian Keith stands out as a movie not often seen on TV or in film. Some of you might remember Ken Takajura in "Black Rain", another Yakuza themed file starring Michael Douglas.
Toshiro Mifune in Seven Samurai and Yojimbo, movies which were the basis for many action films later on.
The Wind and the Lion is a stirring epic adventure and starred Sean Connery, Candice Bergen and Brian Keith as President Roosevelt.

As a self confessed "obscure movie guy", I have to chime in. Asian cinema is my current addiction so here goes, the following are all Live-Action:
"the Storm Riders" Based on the first Hong Kong manga to use supernatural martial arts. The most expensive chop-soky until "Crouching Tiger", martial arts with Final Fantasy powers. Rent it, buy it! You will not be dissapointed!
"Uzumaki" Based on the manga by Junji Ito. A bizarre horror film about a town possessed by the image of the spiral. I told you it was bizarre.
"The Returner" A young girl travels back in time to stop Aliens from wiping out mankind. Excellent effects, the transforming aircraft alone are worth the price of admission.
"The Legend of Zu Warriors" (there are two of these so make sure you get the newer one) Another Final Fantasy style martial arts film. Atop Zu mountain Gods master their martial arts and battle the forces of evil that threaten the world. The dude with the metal wings should be the template for X-men's Archangel.
That's all for now... I might post again with a different theme.
Enjoy! They're all good!

A couple of favorites of mine:
Krull (medieval setting which a little touch of Scifi, and has the COOLESt weapons a hero has had since the inventions of the lightsaber. And besides, Liam Neeson has a small part).
Heritage (don't know if it was translated that way, it's original spanish title was Herencia). It follow the story of a young german who travels to Argentina to find his lost love, but get robbed at the hotel so goes to live and work at a small bar of an old woman, an italian inmigrant who came to Argentina in the 40-50 in the same way the german guy did. Very interesting interactions between them. Very nice movie, specially if you're living outside your country.
Gossip, with Scott Marsden (Cyclops from the X-Men Movie).
Hudson Hawk. The funniest Bruce Willis movie I've ever seen.
Below. One hell of a thriller. _________________ Improve your IQ! Read a B&W comic today!

Wasnt The Storm Riders the one with the nija on kites and the Samurai who has his had chopped off in a fight so he has it made into the handle and hilt of his sword?
I saw the Returner on the rack at the rental place but have not yet checked it out. _________________ Never smile too big, the gods mistake it for hubris.

I remember that one.
Isn't the weapon some kind of giant throwing star with claws/ boomerang combo that he can control it going back and forth.
Cool movie (at least when I saw it a long time ago it seemed cool) _________________ www.jamica.org
