Richard Corben! -And especially the stories: "Den, The house of silence", "Encounter at war" and "Jeromy Brood".
Corben's pictures are so awesom and reading some of his longer stories can be just as good a film http://www.corbenstudios.com/ and http://www.lambiek.net/corben.htm

I was interested in art from a very early age. So the first artist I can remember trying to emulate is a children's book illustrator named Trina Schart Hymen. (I'm still impressed with her fantasy illustrations, such those for Ruth Nichol's children's books, "Marrow of the World" and "A Walk Out of the World.")
Perhaps because of the printing limits of the time, most of her art was pen and ink, with strong, flowing lines. As a result, my art was very Art Nouveau-looking for a long time.
When I was a little older, my favorites were Don Maitz and Kinuko Craft, two artists who have done a lot of fantasy and SF books covers. My preference was always for a more painterly or illustrative look, over photorealism.

There was a while that I liked Boris but then I grew to really dislike his work. He has good technical ability but I just feel his stuff lacks a soul.
I have always liked a number of people but my first real like Daryl Sweet LOL ... I then learned more and really don't like a lot of his work now but I like Frazetta, Kaluta, Rackham, NC Wyeth etc ...

Hi, my first post here.
Michael Whelan, Tim White, Frank Frazetta, Boris Vallejo, more than I could remember probably. I like Rowena Morrill's stuff too, the variety of her work is startling; even if you're a fan of hers you can't always see something and recognise it as hers if it is one you never saw before, just because some of her work is so varied.
Boris Vallejo's stuff is always a technical tour-de-force, Tim White has a great command of mood; there must be hundreds of artists who have made works that I have admired in different ways.

I like Larry Elmore and Todd Lockwood. They are both excellent artists. Lockwood really nailed the drow and Elmore's skin tones are always so realistic.

Yep, they do ... I am not really sure why I liked him to be honest. I liked some of the outfits maybe? But as you said, I really don't like him. I think it may have been that his was the first Tolkien calendar I had and that was when I was first exposed to Tolkien.

Smudger; you beat me to it, drat shulda logged on a few minutes earlier
Roger Dean and Rodney Matthews were the first artists I really noticed growing up and some of the various artists who did Conan Comics, then I found Boris (later he got married to Julie), Frazetta, and others.
