Whilst we're waiting, I'll just post my picks for the best.
First Place: "Hammers of the Gods - Gather" by ARCHANGEL GABRIEL I really liked this render. Colors, lighting, everything fit together really well, and I like the pose better that the other one.
Second Place: "Force Assemblage..." by INFINITOS I liked the style of this one. A lot.
Third Place:The Rings by greyson5 Because I thought it was funny.
And I give and honorable mention to myself, for giving it the old college try. |

| Greysons is theoneof those 3 i would even consider valid for the contest as it has the least amount of post work. |

Yeah, I didn't really even think about the rules when I wrote that. I just picked the ones I liked the best.
I don't know what archangel gabriel used, but I'm pretty sure most of it can be achieved through SSS, clever lighting and other effect available in most standard packages. Even the lightning is possible through particles. (I'm not saying that it was, though) How much postwork does it take to disqualitfy it? |

The rules quite clearly state that moderate postwork is allowed, "moderate" being a relative term and therefore left in the hands of the judges. I think it's in place to discourage complete paint-overs and level the playing field for people who don't have/are less-skilled at Photoshop, Painter, etc.
Personally, I think the final image is more important than how it was created. That said, I now make a point of using as little postwork as possible in my contest renders and instead finding 3D workarounds (eg. alpha channels on flat planes, particles and glowing materials) to get the effects I'm after. Limitation breeds ingenuity, which is one of the great things about these contests. |

now I'm not in charge of the contest...but just to keep you guys in the loop...the final counts were sent/being sent to the "main man" from the judges by this Friday (3/4). So hopefully they should be up this weekend.
Now again I am not in charge so these are my thoughts....you may still want to keep a glass of water handy in case your lips get dry from whistling some more. |
