Ok, by the way - NOTE:
Since I just remembered that Daz doesn't work on weekends, it's going to be at least Monday before I can get in touch with them and get the vouchers and software downloads taken care of.
It'll probably be after Monday before I hear back from anyone there.
So be patient, and give me maybe a week to get all of this coordinated and setteld out. However, everyone *WILL* be getting their prizes in as timely a manner as I can possibly manage. ;]
I'll probably be emailing prizes winners to make sure that I know what usernames are at RDNA and Daz [if you have a different usernick there] so I can make sure they know who to credit vouchers, downloads, and gift certificates to.
***************************************
ALSO: For anyone who might be interested, I'm going to attempt to do another one of these style contests after Christmas: this one a "Design a Pulp Novel cover" contest. Watch the front page for it. ;]
It'll be a chance for people to try out their design skills on something a bit different, and a chance for the folks who didn't place to get a second shot at it now that they're a bit more comfortable with the parameters and what's expected.
This was fun, everyone. Thanks. ;] _________________ "I'd add a legitimate comment here, but that would mean reading everything, which I have no patience for." - Slynky

That's a GREAT idea. Already looking forward to it -- even if I can't enter two in a row (that's still the rule -- if you win in the last one you can't enter in the next one -- isn't it?).
In any case, I'll probably enter that just for the fun of it. Which is the best reason to enter these things anyway. |

Yup, pretty much. And those movie era posters are highly stereotyped. ;]
Your entry probably just didn't fit the conception a lot of judges were looking at.
I know that I grew up on those movies and posters in theatre lobbies, so I have a pretty solid stereotype in my mind, just like I do of the atypical Pulp Novel cover and style.
A contest is kind of like submitting a finished proof to an art director: you not only have to match the technical qualifications... you have to figure out what the art director is looking for - or you don't get hired.
I did my best to illustrate the style in the promo poster for the contest, as well as the size and format we were looking for, according to the guidelines.

*snicker* Having spent more years than I care to think of in publications design as a freelancer: a "few lines of text" is a lot of the artistry.

Might be best.
We'll both allow that we could have gone farther and didn't.
Anyway, you had a good entry, just the way it goes. I hope you at least enjoyed the contest. |

Uhhh.... let me get back to you on that. ;]
BillyBob, Sturk, and theImmortal did the last batch of contests we had, so I'm not sure what parameters they set down. My involvement in those was mostly of the "Ok, you need me to do anything to facilitate?"
I'll work it out before the next one. We'll worry about it then. |

You didn't win. Get over it.
Why does there always have to be someone in EVERY Poser contest who has to whine and bitch about how their entry was as good or better than the ones that won prizes? _________________ Jim Harnock - ODS

Thanks, ODS--- I think I can speak for everyone in saying we all put a lot of work into our entries---to have someone come along and point out why we shouldn't have won and they should have is a bit insulting. _________________ -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Actually it is very insulting. Speaking for myself, each entry (recall i did one and did not use it) took several days of free time to complete.
i try to produce 3 pieces for any given project. One the client asks for, one that i think they will like better and one that is totally over the top pushing all of the boundries that were set.
This guy just gave the "over the top" option and is now bitter because it wasn't received as well as he would like. i empathize, but that bit about text was a straight up whiney bitch insult. i spend my day designing ads and layout promotional materials. Any one thinks that even the smallest bit of text is NOT a graphical element of any design is either a 12 year old or a moron.
Anything you include on your final image is a graphic element and therefore deserves all the consideration of those carefully placed brushstrokes, ink lines and pencil smudges. i think most of us get that. (there are a surprising number of pro graphics types here which could be why i post to this site over pretty much all others)
90% of the entries showed a clear line of thought and research. BTW, oh whiner type person. The brushed effect was a great idea, next time apply it to your type as well.
Sorry. . didn't mean to run on at the mouth. . erm keyboard. Been stewing over that artistry comment a little bit as i was nt only pleased with the way my entry came out but incredibly happy to have placed so someone trying to tear it down just got my irish up. |

Thank you - thank you - thank you
This was allot of firsts for me and just to be included let alone to get 3rd
is most encouraging. Next time I'll do some research - It does make a difference.
Thanks to all it was fun! |

Wellll, from what I remember, a first place winner couldn't enter the next contest and was roped, er, asked nicely, to be a judge in the next contest.
I think the reasoning behind that rule is that we had a run of a few contests many years ago when the same 1-2 people won every single time. We wanted to encourage people to continue to submit stuff, so we made the "first place winner can't enter the next one" rule. I am all for changing the rule if that is the popular opinion. |

*ahem* Let's not go all the way over to flame war on this.
For one thing, that's my job.
Honest. It's in my non-existant contract. Right in the fine print next to "Ironbear's salary shall consist of all of the hapless forumites he can eat."
NOTE: Not saying we've hit flamage point yet. But we're starting to push it in my expert opinion. Let's let it rest. Time to congratulate the winners and let the rest go.
Meanwhile, I'm going to go back to sorting out prizes and mailing out links. ;] _________________ "I'd add a legitimate comment here, but that would mean reading everything, which I have no patience for." - Slynky

Remember the holidays are coming up and it's mandatory that everyone be nice to each other, you know all that good chear toward your fellow man type of crap.
Besides if you want to have a flame war you need to get written permission first. Bring up your request to the proper people (I.B.), a committee will then be assigned to see if it will be worth anyones time and then deliberate over said flame war to see what guidlines and boundaries need to be set, it's a very long process so if we (I.B) don't get to your request for a while please be patient, as the deliberation process especially can take quite a while.
Thank you for your time and patronage. |
