Am I the only one uncomfortable about this upcoming theatrical release? First they pulled all scenes of Spiderman and the world trade center from Spiderman 2 out of "Respect" and then they turn around and make a hugeassed movie about the whole mess? How screwed up is that?

Yeah .. It is pretty messed up. They had the plane movies first and then the trade center though but it is still messed up.

I'm sure I'm going to get flamed for this. What else is new.

What I find in particular bad taste is that it looks like the movie glorifies the 23 Port Authority cops who died at the WTC. For me the death tolls of the first responders at the World Trade speaks Volumes.

Around 450 fire fighters died. Almost 200 EMS people died. But there were only 23 Port Authority Cops.

As far as I'm concerned this movie is an insult to those brave people who ran into the shadow of death while all but the few police who were trapped there ran the other way.

I suppose the story of the only 23 good cops in New York that day is worth telling, but I'm always going to wonder where the hell the other 60,000 NYPD were when the REAL heroes were dying.

I dunno.

Hollywierd seems to get it coming and going here on this one:

1) If they pay zero attention to 9/11 and don't touch on it in movies, then they get blasted for ignoring it.

2) If they do a film on it, even if it's a serious and non-conspiracy theory based one [which interestingly, Stone seems to have done], they get blasted for profiteering off of it.

Damned if they do, damned if they dun't. Screw it - they might as well be damned and make money. ;) I'm not forced to go see it, either way.

I'll tell you what does make me grit my teeth every time I see it though: it's the commercials for those Franklin Mint 9/11 Limited Edition Commemorative Gold Coins - COMPLETE with silver from Ground Zero! - that cable's been running for awhile. Anyone else have an urge to chuck an ashtray through the TV when one of those comes on?

I haven't seen one of those but I'm not surprised they exist. Just one more way to profit from someone's grief if you ask me.

As for Hollyweird being screwed going and coming, I disagree. They get screwed because they use double standards. Why pull the Twin Towers scene from Spiderman to spare people's feelings and then turn around and make this film honoring just a small portion of the heros from that particular tragedy? That's what made no sense to me. They butchered a good film by removing a scene that could have been a good tribute to the towers in the name of honoring people's grief only to turn around and produce this latest film which doesn't honor enough of the hero's involved. Just makes no sense to me.

You haven't missed much if you haven't yet seen one of those. Just an opportunity to have your stomach turned - and gods know there's plenty of those around.

Lord knows I have nothing against either profit or capitalism.. but at least a modicum of taste in some things *would* be nice on occassion.

Not that THAT will ever happen.

I'm just miffed because I seem to remember the trailer that had the helicopter caught in spidy's web between the two towers, or did I just dream that up? It would have been a great scene to see in the movie regardless.

Maybe.

Problem with making broad statements like that [and I've made them myself about Hollywood, so you're not alone] is that "Hollywood" isn't some homogenous entity with one discrete agreed-upon-beforehand set of sensibilities and agendas.

Sam Raimi isn't Oliver Stone. You have a wide variety of viewpoints and agendas across a large industry ranging from hardcore libertarians like Tom Sellek to dyed-in-the-wool communists like Ed Asner to solid conservatives here and there. There's a predominately leftist tilt, but overall, the only real driving common agenda is "make money by catering to what we think audiences want".

Regardless of trivial considerations like taste or picture quality or script or storyline. ;)

If that weren't the case, you wouldn't have die hard gun control advocates like Kirk Douglas [or Michael Douglas] happily making careers as gun-toting gunslingers and adventurers. It's make money.

So you get Sam Raimi deciding to cut a scene that he thinks might be problematical in one year, and Oliver Stone deciding to make money off of what was cut out years earlier. It's only a double standard if the same directors and producers had made both pics and both decisions.

It's inconsistency, which is something different.

I saw it on DVD for Christmas. As someone who has worked in downtown Manhattan most of my life, I was blown away at the accuracy and the imagery. It was like they filmed it as 9/11 happened. It was freakin eerie.

As far as the Spidey trailer, we were all in a different mindset 5 years ago. The wounds were still open. It also made no sense to have a movie come out featuring twin towers that were no longer there anyway. I have friends that worked cleanup at Ground Zero... they're STILL not ready to see World Trade Center or the original Spider-Man trailer.

But to me, I saw it as "This was just a peek at two lives and the hell their families went through. Imagine that at almost 2000 times that scale...". I thought it was incredible and very respectful. And no conspiracy theories from Oliver Stone. Imagine that! :D
