Oh yeah... Barlowe's Guide is way cool. I have a copy, and one year after it came out, I gave copies to friends who were into sci-fi as XMass or birthday presents. The art in that is primo.

Howby x2. ;]

If I were a good enough modeler, i'd tackle the overlord as a figure, and the Dirdir.

Hmm, the Dirdir wouldn't be all that hard, really, but the Overlord would take some real work. All those damned fingers! Yeow!

As far as the rest, I love the first two Alien movies, though the third was mediocre and Alien Resurrection was even worse. I think that creature is the coolest ever, both in looks and in details (acid for blood, laying eggs in human hosts, etc.). One nasty mother!

I'm one of the eight people in the world that love Bladerunner, too. Original trek was cool, if corny, TNG had some good characters, even if it tended to be a bit to PC and technical, and I've never gotten into any of the newer shows. I think the Generations movie is the best Trek ever.

In books, I don't really tend to follow a writer too much, I just look for good stories. Although I've enjoyed quite a few Larry Niven books. But then he's written some real stinkers, too. And of course, Isaac asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, and Frank Herbert are all favorites.

And how could I not love the mighty Star Wars movies, though I hesitate to call them science fiction. The original trilogy was great fun, although Phantom Menace was a disappointment and... well, despite the very real risk of waking up with a Tauntaun's head in my bed, I have to say that I hated Attack Of The Clones. Dull, dull, dull. I'm sincerely hoping Episode 3 proves to be a dramatic improvement. I mean, considering what we KNOW is going to happen and how much we want to actually see it, it SHOULD be the most exciting one ever! But I have my doubts...

Hrmmm... Star Wars. No comment, I'm not a fan. I think that Mark Hamil did some of his best work in the Wing Commander games.

Oh wait, that was a commnt, wasn't it? ;]

Good stories generally make me follow an authors works... with the ever rising cost of paperbacks, I get choosier and choosier when I shop for novels. Bujold, Schmidt, and a number of other authors I know will give me a decent read for my buck.

Have to say, I have a sneaking addiction to origional series Star Trek novels. It's my closet vice. *g*
Even the bad ones are better than nothing to read. ;]

I'm going to add both Predator movies to the mix. I love both, even if the second had a vastly different feel than the first one.
Are the various Crow movies Sci-fi or fantasy? The first was primo for atmosphere and action. And intensity... Brandon Lee could do intense very well.

I've never seen the Crow. What can I tell you, I'm just culturally illiterate.;)

I think the 80's remake of "The Thing" was great. More of a horror flick than sci-fi, I suppose, but the creature WAS an alien, damn it!

I really love to see aliens that are ALIEN, you know? Not just a human with fur and wings or whatever, but an alien MIND. That's one thing I like about Larry Niven, he's great when it comes to that. "The Mote In God's Eye" is one that instantly comes to mind in that regard.

Unfortunately, I have a terrible memory and have a hard time remembering this stuff. But take me to a library and I can point out some great reads.

IMO, truly great movies are few and far between, because even if they start off with a great idea, once it gets to Hollywood... things go astray. And don't even get me started on tv. Trek and X-Files had their moments now and, but other than that, count me out. I don't even watch tv these days. I mean, NEVER. Videos, sure, but not cable.

Of course, with the internet, who has the time anyway?;)

Oh gods! I'd forgotten about the remake of the Thing til you'd said that. Horror flick yeah, but Man! what a cool alien. ;]
Welll... tchnically, the first Alien was a horror flick, not sci-fi. And classic horror at that.

But who cares.... both are also classic sci-fi, among the few movies that blend both genre's well. Bladrunner had some classic horror elements to it also.

Hrmmm... I listen to a lot of TV, does that count? I run HBO and Showtime for "background noise" while I work. My workdesk set up is in the living room, and the way it's designed, I can raise my head to look at the tube if there's a movie on I like. Otherwise I mostly ignore it.

De Tube: Dark Angel, Alien Nation, Something Is Out There, origional Trek, occassional episodes of Voyager [I'm a 38ofD fan, er... 7of9], The Crow: Stairway to Heaven, Witchblade, although I think the combat is way, way too stylised mostly to cover up the directors inability to do action scenes well... the made for de tube Chameleon movies [Bobbi Phillips fan also], Farscape, Babylon 5...

I enjoy a lot of TV Sci-Fi, even if way too much of it is mediocre.

Ack, my tv background noise usually consists of Blue's Clues, Sesame Street, and (dare I say it?) Barney. But it keeps the boy from trying to push buttons on my keyboard.

Of course, the greatest science fiction tale ever told has to be Douglas Adams' "Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy". Truly a masterpiece of modern literature.;)

Ah! Forgot to mention that's WHY my TV background noise is Sci-Fi channel and sci-fi movies. It keeps my Cat from trying to push buttons on my keyboard. ;]

My Russian Blue likes watching scf-fi movies and star-trek. And Discovery channel. He's... wierd, for a cat.
Hey.. with me for his pet human, whattaya expect?

The other cat just sleeps on top of my monitor and bats at tmy joystick when I'm gaming. She doesn't care much for TV.

I'd forgotten about those. I've read them, but it's been a long time. Man, I can't believe he's dead. The world's just not quite as cool anymore.

I have the tv version of the Guide on video, but it doesn't even begin to do the books justice. I love his writing, the WAY he says things, even more than the stories themselves.

There was a lot of talk a few years ago about a big screen version, but it never happened. And that's probably all for the best...8o

If they ever did a big budget version of Hitchhiker's Guide they would probably throw out the entire story, cast American stars for the leads (with a token Brit appearance by David Bowie as Zaphod Beeblebrox), songs by Andrew Lloyd Webber, and fill it with unnecessary special effects by ILM.

Gwyneth Paltrow as Trillian, and Brad Pitt as The Dish of the Day.

Bruce Willis as Ford Prefect.

Okay let's see, fav Sci-Fi...

If I'm in the mood for something light and filled with eye candy I look to Star Wars and Star Trek (even if I want to see the latest flick).
Andromeda I could do without, and Babylon 5 I could do with more. From what I've seen of Enterprise, if I watched Tv, it'd be something I'd tune into.
But books wise, I'd have to say Orson Scott Card. If you haven't read Ender's Game, go right to the library and read it cover to cover. Outstanding stuff, the guy is a great character writer.

Hrmm, guess that's my two cents... 8)

Most of the above...

Also wanted to throw in a recent discovery, Lexx. The giant, world killer, bug shaped, spaceship from Canada.
