Don't know how many of you have this yet but I hope one of the lucky beta testers might have the answer to this one: I downloaded P5 to my desktop and discovered it put the new software into a Curious Labs directory, while P4 is still in a Metacreations library.

Now I purchased the upgrade and thought the software would take into account I already had a previous version, but now I seem to have *both* P4 and P5 and each seems to operate separately. But I don't want to believe they operate exclusively, i.e., the P4 add-ons *should* work in P5. Yet I notice all the filing conventions have changed. Everything in P5 seems to be a .crz now. And I'm finding nothing in the P5 manual about the software's compatibility with P4 add-ons. So my initial idea of just dragging everything into P5 came to an abrupt halt.

Anyone know if this is the case. Is my entire P4 library worthless in P5? I'd hate to think. P5's da bomb so far and it'd be depressing to think to use it I have to forget everything I currently own to use P5.

thanx in advance

whoops

Spoke too soon. It's not just .crz. But also .hdz and .fcz. It looks like the entire file name convention has changed.

Are you sure you haven't just activated the compress files option in the preferences? I don't have P5 (yet - England gets it later) but I do have Pro-Pack, which has that option and the compressed files end in a z. ie, scenes are saved as .pzz files instead of .pz3 files. Might be what's happened.

Thanks, Raven. Apparently that answered the file naming problem I had. (Of which I'll have to learn more of.)

For the other issue, two vers. of Poser, that was Curious' intent. (This part I got from CL.) I'm not sure why and as I learn about the software it'll probably become obvious. But I *can* access my P4 add-ons via a downloads option in P5. (Finally found something in my manual about this, tho it took a little patience, of which I have little for manuals.)

This, by the way, is a great feature. It not only allows me to grab Poser-related material right off the Internet and is even capable of installing it for me (this feature I was aware of) but *glory!glory!* it allows the User to have multiple Runtimes!!!! This will allow the user to have greater control of their library(ies). i.e., you can have your Poser add-ons in various directories and filed to your convenience.

P5 hasn't arrived yet, so I may be totally out to lunch with this, but... why couldn't you just move your P4 libraries into your P5 directories, then uninstall P4?

Well, Q, that was my first thought. Until I saw the convention used for naming files. (I wasn't aware of the compression feature you Pro Pack folk are looong familiar with.) Not knowing what .crz and .hdz were, I didn't want to assume that P5 would recognize .rsr and .cr2, etc. That's why I chose to inquire first.

And as you may see from eventual posts, I didn't need to move anything. P5 comes with a feature that allows me to access multiple Runtime directories.

thanx for the advice tho

Well it's probably been worked out buttt...

You can use everything from P4 in P5 with no problems, just drap & drop to the runtime. Currently I added my P4 Runtime as a 3rd folder (P5 & Download being the other two) to the listings.

I do make one suggestion though. I loaded P5, then unloaded P4PP and P5 has been having fits about finding Textures under P4 since then. Don't know what burmped it (me, the uninstall, a bug in the udate or what). You may want to unload P4 first or at least wait and hook that runtime up to P5 after you unistall it.

Since you're just starting with P-5, and enthusiastic toward learning its quirks, you may want to try some metallic reflection mapped characters or props from your old P-4 library.

Additionally, look and see what happens to any reflectance color from an old P-4 file that wasn't set on black.

If you want to see an interesting problem try Mr. X's Supergirl. I'm interested in knowing whether or not the current patch fixed the distortion trouble.

One feature I really don't like is the tendency for new object files to generate themselves everytime you apply a morph to Don, Judy, Dork, or Posette. Look for the new objects to pop up in your character library files.

Don't get me wrong, it's not all greif. C.L. doesn't base their marketing hype on telling about the really great features, like the reflection mapping or the extra .avi video codecs.

As long as its stable on your op system, it's not too bad. If it crashes at the start, a new firewall program may correct the trouble.
