Figured I'd pass along some of the resources I use/have used in my writing, for those who might be interested.

Random Name Generator
http://www.kleimo.com/random/name.cfm

Fantasy Name Generator
http://spitfire.ausys.se/johan/names/default.htm

Visual Database of Extremist Logos, Symbols, Tattoos
http://www.adl.org/hate_symbols/default.asp

Myths and Legends
http://members.bellatlantic.net/~vze33gpz/myth.html

EgyptMyth - Egyptian mythology
http://egyptmyth.com/

AvatarSearch - occult search engine
http://www.avatarsearch.com/

CDI - Centre for Defense Information
http://www.cdi.org/

Intelligence Resource Program - overview of the intelligence organizations/operations from many countries
http://www.fas.org/irp/index.html

Janes Information Group - THE resource for intelligence and military information from around the wolrd (expensive as hell, but even their free sections are great)
http://www.janes.com

Writing for Comics
http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Forum/9925/

Casebook: Jack the Ripper
http://www.casebook.org/
(this one is just as valuable for its maps and info on life in Victorian England as it is for details of the crimes themselves)

TONMO - The Octobpus News Magazine Online
http://www.tonmo.com/
(a really wierd one that might inspire a modern-day Jules Verne)

Cryptozoology.com
http://www.cryptozoology.com

Robin Hood
http://benturner.com/robinhood/

===

I had a couple of other really good ones, but they seem to be dead links now. It's too bad -- one was a virtual encyclopaedia of demons, it was great.

Side note about Janes Information Group -- a lot of their stuff, like their aircraft, warship and ground forces recognition guides, can be purchased from bookstores. I got their aircraft guide last year and I love it. Thanks to that book, I corrected CNN a half-dozen time when they showed footage or military aircraft in the Gulf region and said it was something it wasn't ;)

Thank you! Glad to see you listed Avatar Search! YAY!

I love stuff like this, and to have this kind of list is invaluable. If I can find my old bookmarks, I might be able to add to this.

Of course being Wiccan, I also have a bunch more links to old gods and goddesses and mythological information as well. If anyone wants to represent "The Craft of the Wise" in any accurate form, I strongly recommend a visit to:
www.witchvox.com.

Please be aware that there is often humour involved on this site, but that there are a HUGE amount of very fabulous resources on things pagan and magical.

When I find more of my bookmarks that are similar I'll be happy to add them!

No more websites, but here are some books well worth checking out. None are specifically about comics, but writing is writing and you need to use the same techniques and fill the same needs in any format.

The Screenwriters' Bible (David Trottier) - geared towards scriptwriting, obviously, but it has a fantastic "checklist" you can use for any plot you're writing to make sure you don't have any holes or major weaknesses. I first bought this book almost seven years ago, and I still go back and reference it with every piece of fiction I write, whether it's a screenplay, a comic script or a novel.

Making a Good Script Great (Linda Seger) - again, primarily geared towards screenplays, but as with Trottier's book, the tips contained within can be applied to any piece of fiction. Fantastic section on creating believable characters and dialogue.

Stephen King: On Writing (Stephen King) - not a "how to" book as much as it is King talking about how his career began, his approach to writing and his philosophy on writing. This is a great read and despite it not being an instruction manual, I actually found it really enlightening and it helped my writing (or more accurately, my approach to it) a lot. I never realized how funny King is until I read this book.

Hey Remedy, since you seem to have a handle on the occult, you might be able to help me with this... I had a bookmark called Tezrian's Vault of Demonolatry -- it was a fantastic site but it seems to be gone now, the URL bounces over to Radio Free Satan. Have you heard of it resurfacing anywhere?

Some additional resources...

http://www.20000-names.com - an index of, you guessed it, 20,000 names, sorted by gender and nationality/ethnicity.

http://www.freaksandgeeks.com/OtherJunk/MakingContentPages/MakingBible.html - not comics-specific, but this is the series bible written by the creator of the now-defunct TV show Freaks & Geeks. It's a really good reference to show you just how well you need to know your "world."

http://smccd.net/accounts/helton/toolsforwriting.htm - this one is actually about academic writing, written by a history professor. The reason I include it here is because it contains some great tips on efficient research methods as well as a handy section called Chronologies & Factsheets: Timelines of & facts about various historical periods and events, which can be helpful for background info.

http://www.rfthomas.clara.net/bigfoot.html - a pretty good site devoted to sasquatch (bigfoot). Hairy hominids have been making appearances in literature since Gilgamesh, so don't assume this kind of info is only useful for CryptoFiction.

Since the Writer's Forum isn't getting much traffic, I've moved this to the AniMotions Online Comic Venue. Should be of use here, too.
