I'm not a hard-core gamer per say, so imagine my shock when Final Fantasy XI online took over my life. :D I think its because of all of the details and depth they added.... What is it that makes you go back for more in games? :)

Anyways the Taru race is so incredibly adorable! Their 'panic' animation is just TOO cute and even the way they run and sit and stand is adorable.

All Characters even come in 3 different sizes. :)

The Mithras are feline females, and their tails sway almost hypnotically.
Their panic animation actually has a kitty pawing quality to it. Armor looks great on them too. ;)
The male Elvaan race can be very stylish as well.

The graphics may not be everything in a game, but I know that for me they really make the difference between my just trying it and leaving, and my coming back for more.

Hmm, I was thinking about dishing out the $199 for a PS2 with the BB adapter, then another $100 for the game and HD, and then get into a BB plan for about $49.99 monthly... just for this game.

I really enjoyed Phantasy Star Online Ver.2 on the Dreamcast (still do every once in a while with the new servers that popped up), but that game still lacked something... which I'm taking probably FF X1 has.

I haven't even seen demos of the game... would you say it's like Playing FFX but online? (graphic-movement-wise)

I thought of it kind of as an investment. You'll probably need a harddrive for many PS2 games eventually (FFXII?), so may as well get it now that it comes pre-loaded with FFXI and the first expansion. :)
One thing that's REALLY useful- the Netplay Keyboard. You can get an onscreen keyboard with the usual PS2 controllers, but typing turns tedious then, and using the Macros systems for quick commands would be a multi-button clicking hassle.
Or, if your computer is already powerful enough, the PC version has much better graphics. :)
We have both versions at the apartment. I like lounging on the sofa with the PS2 version, but I also enjoy playing on the PC when I'm allowed. :D

Oh yeah. Maybe one up in certain cases. Your characters blink and breathe and each race has its idiosyncracies and specific animations.
Plus you look different depending on what you wear. You can wear a hat that looks like a beret, or a face mask. Thick leather gloves, or plated, or not... A gown, armor, robes, slacks, tunics... many, many choices. :)

You can create parties of up to 6 people. But you can also ally with another party. I haven't tried that yet.
You can get these things called link pearls. You can carry as many as you want, but can only equip one at a time. Each pearl is to a linkshell - a group of players that can chat together. That's outside of the typical "Friend" system where you can get messages and such.

Or you can ignore everyone and play as a Beastmaster or something. :) You can unlock that special class at level 30, same as Summoner, Bard, and a few others.

sounds cool enough, but I was reading now that the leveling up curve is really steep... like, you have to spend tons of hours being a really low-level character.

Anyway, I'll keep an eye on this because I can't really afford an investement like that right now, but I'm for sure interested to see how the FFXI community develops.

Actually levels 1-10 are a snap.
I have a lvl 24RDM/13WHM and I've only been playing the game a month, some after work and weekends. :)
It depends on your focus as well. I've been doing missions, quests, & some Fishing.
Some people just power level. If you find/create a good Party, the exp just flows in.
Also, you don't _have_ to do a subjob, so you could focus on getting your initial main job up even faster.
I liked doing a subjob because it gave me more mana and access to extra spells. Subjobs are a boost.

In my case there's a time issue because I'm simply addicted. :D

At least you guys get a chance to play the game. Us poor europeans will never get the chance, unless we move to America but that's a bit extreme.

I love the way games companies usually put it up to "translation problems" but, although it is debateable, us British do speak the same language as the Americans :) .

Oh well go figure.

Rant over.

They don't intend to take it to Europe?!
You could also move to Japan to play it. :D

Actually the Playstation2, PC, and Japanese players are all using the same servers. So I sometimes stand around watching Japanese symbols fly by. There is a very rudimentary translation system, with dropdown menus.

Anyways, the Japanese players all had the game well before it opened up in America, so if you see really high lvl characters with the best gear, the odds are they're Japanese. :)

I got it shortly after it came out for the PC in NA.

It's a really fun game with lots of depth. The missions (and some of the quests) keep the story of the game moving forward.

You can change jobs whenever you're in one of the 4 major cities which adds a lot of diversity to the gameplay. If you get sick of smacking things about with your sword then you can switch to a mage job. You can use any job as a subjob, which paves the way for some interesting combinations.

I do have a gripe with it though. At this point, the game is getting so it's a hassle. I have WHM up to 41. Because the game is group dependant for most jobs (Beastmaster is an exception...it can play the game solo...just not quickly), you could sit around for hours waiting to get into a group (even as a White Mage which is a very high demand job, I've run into this). So you could waste hours trying to get into a group, so you can spend 2 to 4 hours to go up a level. If you don't have 6 - 8 hours at a crack to devote to the game, you won't progress fast enough to keep grouping with the good groups you play with (hence, you're stuck with pickup groups...which is the very reason for the long periods of time it takes to get into a group in the first place).

Travelling is a huge timesink at first....as you gain levels and rank you have more options to speed it up, but it still takes time to travel.

I love being able to change jobs.

As for Partying, a linkshell group really helps. Of course the trick is synching up schedules. :)

I'm lvl 30R/14W now, working on the Bard/SMN/PAL subjob quests. I want to open them all eventually.

I can't wait 'til I can use Airships all the time. Though I really like travelling by Chocobo too.
