Heh. That movie was released a quarter-century before I was born, man I just have a soft spot for old movies -- I have most of the old Universal horror flicks on DVD too. The good ones, anyway. _________________ Jim Harnock - ODS

In the comics, Peter Parker was a genius because the radioactive spider bite was a result of his own invention/experiment (does memory serve correctly here?) and because he invented the web-spinning solution and device. But in the movies there is no evidence that he is genius material. And why didn't his spidey-sense work when he was getting hit in the head by pedestrians after he dropped his papers? Parker was portrayed as a comical clod tripping and dropping things.
But the movie did get better after that. The theme that everyone can be a hero was really inspiring.
The hospital scene was horrifying (and hilarious if you've seen Sam Raimi's Evil Dead series). |

Peter was bitten by a spider during a science experiment that he as attending, it wasn't actually his experiment, but yes he did create the webbing and shooters himself, being the science geek he is...
In the movie it does show that he is sort of that science geek, Dr. Connors said he was brillaint but lazy, and he was able to keep the debate up so to speak with Dr. Octavious about the upcoming experiment...
As far as the spidey sense....at that point of the movie most of his powers had went dormant, so his spidey sense more than likely followed suit...
Did I mention I like Spidey?? |

| So maybe all of Peter Parker's stupid clumsiness was a result of his unconscious/subconscious desire to be normal again. He was committing self-sabotage. I get it now! In the end he discovers it's his love for other people, especially Mary Jane, that gives him his strength. It is a complicated movie. They crammed alot in there. |

And to add a sidebar to all this --- Spidey didnt just "Create" his web formula and wrist bracelets. It was later explained, in both comic and cartoon format, that he believes the knowledge he needed to create them was given by the spider during the bite.
I hated the idea of no web sbooters in the first, but then when I saw it, it made sense, to explain all they had to do, and still explain how he couldm ake shooters and webs like in the comic would have been a four h0our movie (Not that Im complaining about that).
And I agree...Part Deux was fantastic. Just saw it yesterday. We went on Canada Day to avoid crowds in the threatre...And it was still packed (That is like a better version of the Fourth of July...with better beer and all) =)
We watched it once...walked out, bought two more tickets, and went back for a second round.
They really tied up some loose ends (Mary Jane, Uncle Ben/Aunt May), and opened so many doors for future ideas (Green Goblin II, return of the Green Goblin, Man-Wolf, The Lizard to name a few). They gave Peter that human quality that the comics started doing a few years back.
But i still say Whatshername playing MJ just is so wrong!!! Im sorry...No add company would hire her, crooked teeth and all, to be their poster child...she does not have the height, nor the figure or looks to be a model. I just dont buy her. Reverse the roles, kill her off in the next one, and bring on Gwen!!!!
There...My ranting is over =)
Happy Canada Day to all, and to all a safe Fourth of July! _________________ =============================

| I agree with you totally. I do think she is a good actress, but she is in no way Mary Jane Watson. |

Movie MJ is definitely a different character than comics MJ. Both of characters are the kind of tease that likes to pit Popeye against Brutus for the sake of getting attention. I thought the movie version had a much sweeter personality but was less perfect physically. I don't think a movie audience could stomach the kind of nasty character MJ was in 60's and 70's vintage comics. Comics MJ used Parker as a door mat. Making her pretty, but less perfect physically, was a good choice by the producers. For me it makes her more credible as a flesh and blood character and less obnoxious.
I've observed the most perfect looking beautiful women often have mean spoiled personalities, because we men are stupid enough to tolerate that kind of behavior.
Hopefully I will continue to learn the same lesson quite a few more times. |

| Okay, i'm probably going to get blasted for saying this, but i'll take the heat. I saw Spiderman 2 Friday night and to be perfectly honest, it was DESCENT...not great, not outstanding, but descent. The visuals, i will say were damn impressing, I liked the look of the fight scenes between Spidey and Doc Ock. But beyond that, I don't feel that the characters were done justice...the whole octopus arm artificial intelligence and him talking to them...that was putting a stretch on it. And seriously how many times did Spidey pull of his mask...the only people who don't know who he is is Aunt May and Jonah Jameson...lol. They saved face by protraying more of Peter Parker's intellect(points for that). As a sequel, I definitely think it exceeded the first one. But as a "spider-man" movie and more importantly as a "comic book" movie. It left me wanting more.(where are the cameos? No imposing Freedom Four skyscraper in the back) I'd say it's in the top ten but the BEST comic movie of all time(as the reviewers are claiming)I'm not so sure about that one. Here's to hoping to a Spiderman/Venom movie... |
