Hi,
Just a few thoughts after reading the discussion so far.
Do you think this venue would stretch from childrens stories to adult erotica?
Do you think it would have different sections for various genres?
If the site administrators do not want to be publishers who is going to edit and do the quality control?
I have bought e-books in pdf format so why does the format create a security issue?

Hi there. I've copied your post the the "Online Comic Venue" announcement thread to keep all the Q&A in one spot. :) I can't answer your questions, but I'm sure someone in there can.

I'm pretty sure almost any content would go. If it's of a mature nature it may have to go under the Renderotica store.

Right now, I think we to actually get stuff in the store. It will look better to have a bunch of books lumped togther, then have say a single childrens title in it's own catagory. I don't personally thin a genre should be split out until there are at least 6 titles of that type avalable.

Editing is going to have to be one your end of things. This is essentially venue to self publish. If you were to self publish then you would either need to edit for yourself, or hire some one.

PDF is actually going to help solve the security issue, but there are comes caveits.
A PDF that is mearly password protected can still be printed to an image file and Warezed. Or even easier, just give out the password with the PDF.
The first security step it to make sure every sale of every book has a unique password. But unless this is automated, which is apparently expensive as hell, it's not really worth it. This is also bother for the customer who must keep a record of all these unique passwords to read their book.

We could tie the password to the customers account, and encode every book for that customer with a single password. But this still wouldn't protect us from the print and scans or the print to file guys.

The ideal protection would be a semi-invisible system that would be hidden on every page of the book. It would not be noticible if you weren't looking for it, and it would lead back to the individual transaction of the purchaser so if the PDF was warezed, we could take action againt the original purchaser. Again this is a VERY expensive development cost requiring expertise in stenography as well as transaction system integration, and some on the fly image editing to water-mark the pages AT transaction time.

I think, until we get the ball rolling, we might just have to live with the per user password.

Rattler, reading your reply to Lady-Muck, reminded me of something I thought of on the way to work this morning. Why couldn't a system be set up where say, samples or "sneak Previews" were available free. Then If a costumer wanted to they could subscribe to the titles- something simular to the membership subscription that Renderotica and severl other sites have in place? Then you could trace who had what by their subscription accounts.
I admiot the free downloads could still be ripped off if someone was that twisted, but wouldn't this protect the major body of titles?

Sorry I didn't respond sooner. I've gotten a decent bit of Freelance work and have been pretty busy.
There are a few problems with the subscription system.

First that comes to mind. How do you split up the sales to pay the artist?

Also, a lot of people run for the hills when they see "subscription".

If the customer subscribes to the book, Animtion's would then have a de-facto contract with the customer to deliver "X" many originals issues of that title. Impossible to guarentte given the fact that the creators will have sole control on weather or not they continue a run of a book.

As for the Sneak Peeks and other ideas. I think for this to work we are going to HAVE to require the creators to give us promotional material. Just like the real world of self published comic, if you want your book to sell, you have generate Buz.

At least starting out, this is going to be the responsibility of the creator. Animtions will try to promote the Venu, but will have no responsibility to promate your specific book.

None of your ideas are bad, and I'm don't want to sound like Mr. Naysay guy, but part of making this work is thinking..."What's the WORST that could happen if we do that."
