All right, I know a few have you have been waiting patiently for me to release my dynamic BatCape for a while now. I also know three of you have been waiting not-so-patiently
So, here's a poll for you. Would you like me to release the cape as soon as possible (it will be free, BTW), or would you like me to wait until my copy of P6 arrives so I can make sure it works equally well in both P5 and P6?
You can see the cape in action here and here. _________________ Jim Harnock - ODS

Honestly I really don't really care.....just as long as your ass releases it! (but probably P6)
Does this make me one of the "not so patiently" |

Yes, it's dynamic. I started it a loooong time ago, but never got around to setting it up as a prop, etc. _________________ Jim Harnock - ODS

The pointy-thingies are done with a transmap so the cape can be used for other characters. _________________ Jim Harnock - ODS

The cape is one-sided geometry. That's what works best in the cloth room -- two-sided geometry tends to get cuaght up in itself, literally. The aren't any issues with reversed normals because the cloth room is actually designed to use one-sided geometry. I'm not sure the mechanics of it, but it works basically like those old Play Doh toys, where you put a block of Plah Doh into a little contraption, press a lever and out comes a Smurf. _________________ Jim Harnock - ODS

I was toying with the idea of a two sided cape for the later Robin costume that would be black on the outside and yellow on the inside, but it's more practical to stack one cape inside another.
My sister would never let me play with the Play-Doh. She would rather let it dry up than risk allowing me to mix the colors, or make something cooler than she could make. |

Yes, the download will include a mini-tutorial on using the cape in the cloth room. You should be able to apply the same basic steps to any object you want to make dynamic.
And Spidey's mask would look awful as dynamic cloth. It would sag around his head, rather than being skin-tight as it should be. _________________ Jim Harnock - ODS

Cool results, but the issues mentioned here are why I don't ussually bother with dynamic cloth. The need for single sided geometry and the lack of control over where it goes.
In your images the cap looks... Idonno... Thin?
I always imagine a hero cape having a little more substance to it. Especialy Batman where I always felt it would be like a peice of leather covered kevlar.
Can you thicken it with a Displacment or bump map? Mayby something that fakes giving the edges some depth?
That would be VERY COOL! |

I want the Golden Goose and I want it Now!! Daddy!
Varuka Salts - Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Of course I'd love a good tutorial on "pulling on Superman's cape" while you're at it. |
