here's a quote from All The Rage which seemes to indicate the return of the one true Green Lantern is rapidly approaching..........
"Lord of the Ring
Ah more Wizard fun. While flipping through the new Previews catalog I noticed the Wizard magazine solicitation reveals that Geoff Johns is writing a new Hal Jordan mini-series called Rebirth. The text implies that Hal will be returned to Green Lantern status. This isn’t a great surprise for most of you as rumors have been swirling about Hal’s return and Geoff’s involvement in the project for a good long while. But just to make sure this is on the level I talked to a few sources. They all verified that Geoff is definitely doing the book and that Wizard screwed up and leaked it in the solicit. Bad Wizard.
The actual text from page 192 in Previews reads:
Top 10 Reasons Hal Jordan Should Be Green Lantern
Tying into DC’s upcoming Rebirth mini-series, Geoff Johns tells us what he thinks about the longstanding Green Lantern debate as we count down why Hal must get the ring back!

Giddy-Effin-Up, Eh! This is too cool.
I lost all interest in DC when Hal was killed off. Even as the Spectre, a character that always sucked as far as I was concerned, Hal just didnt get the respect he deserved.
In the 4-part Mini series "JLA/Avengers", to see Hal as the GL in nearly the entire series was great, and at the end, who saves the Worlds and pulls them apart again? HAL!
So to hear he may be back? Or will be back? That makes mem want to head on down to the Comic store and buy a couple of DC titles just for the shear hell of it =)

I could never keep all the incarnations of Hal straight anyway. I wasn't a big Lantern fan, so I would only catch him from time to time in other mags. Is he GL? Parallax? Spectre? Huh? Still, I can see the appeal. His writers always did a good job of portraying a nobility that never quite seemed right with other GLs.

I haven't collected the GL series since the first 3 issues of Kyle "What's his Name?" becoming a GL. I thought Kyle was too much like Marvel's 1970's Nova (stupid young hero character). Being killed off for frying a few jumped-up, self-righteous, overzealous, gnome toadies seemed like an excessive penance for Hal's character. If I had a power ring I would have fryed them myself. Glad to hear Hal will be back.
Additional question: Has Wizard Magazine leaked the names of the winners in their Video Contest?

Hey BillyBob - Heres the low-down on Hal -
During the whole "Death/Return of Superman" saga, Hal's hometown (Keystone I think...or is that Flash...whatever) got demolished completely by The Cyborg and Mongul, in building the first of two potential engines for a new "War World".
Hal lost everyone he ever loved or cared about.
He knew the ring has unlimited potential, but not enough to undo the death and destruction that was caused.
Upset, angry, saddened, he flew off to Oa after being denied the right to the power he needed.
The blue munchkins sent the Corps after him, but he destroyed each one after another, taking away their power rings and their life.
The blue meanies then sent Sinestro after him, but Hal finally did what he shoulda done years before...He killed sinestro too.
One Oa, he then absorbed all the power of the core battery, becoming omnipotent.
During the Zero hour saga, Hal then took the form of Parallax, and was the one behind time unravelling, so he could not just undo what happened to his city, but to all those that should never have died, like Barry Allen/Flash 1, Supergirl ect.
He then killed off Green Arrow, his best friend, just prior to being defeated.
He disapeared for awhile, and onloy returned when the world again needed his help when the Sun Eater was destroying the sun, and even Superman couldnt stop it as he was losing hism own powers because of it.
Parallax expunged all his power to form a "Second Sun" that the sun eater tried to absorb, but destroyed itself, and Hal, in the process.
For sacrificing his life, Gaea, the Earth Mother, granted him the power of The Spectre (If I am not mistaken).
They brought Hal back a few times as himself, but usually from alternate realities or times. But the real deal coming back? GIDDY UP BABY!!!
=)
OK...just had ta make sure everyone was on the same page...and was bored and wanted to type lol.

Jeff, Hal didn't kill Green Arrow -- it was Ollie that downed Hal, ending Parallax's rampage. Oille was killed while trying to defuse a bomb in an airplane.
My Zero Hour stuff is all packed away right now, but I've got my Quiver TPB right here and it shows flashbacks to both events. _________________ Jim Harnock - ODS

If you're lookin' like a loser, how does that make me look -- the guy who corrected you on a plot from a six year old comic? _________________ Jim Harnock - ODS

Just cause I wanted to join you guys in "Loser" status.....for the record it was Coast City that was destroyed by Mongul and Cyborg;)
BTW, I am totally stoked by the news of Hal's return. While I enjoyed Hal's trip off the deep end, Kyle's story stopped being interesting after about 15 issues. I mean seriously, I think he had the ring taken from him 6 or 8 times in the first year and a half, lol.

Welcome, fellow loser =).
Coast City...thats it. I couldnt remember the city's name for the life of me until this morning. I did an image of Hall back then, P4 Dork variety, my first Hal, with a ring-constructed arm sling, and made it like a photo right after he beat Mongul. On the image is says Coast City...but didnt think of it until today.
And I agree with you on the Kyle thing.
Losing his ring so often, then becoming Ion and being super powerful, yet giving it up? I didnt believe it for a second, and lost my interest quickly. _________________ =============================

I really wish the big companies would just stick with killing off their characters. They screwed Hal up so bad I wont even bother reading it. Yeah sure Hal's the guy we all grew up with, but so was Barry Allen, and I'm glad they kept Wally as the Flash.

The problem with both companies, (video games, movies, etc aside) is they need to do something.
Marvel needs to respect its history and continuity. DC has taken chances, but still need more clean up to do.
Apparently CONTINUITY is a bad word in comic these days. The Powers-That-(Wanna)Be do not want to bog the "kiddies" with 40-50-60 years of baggage. They also run into trouble by vexing the "old-timers' with 'ignoring' what has gone on before.
In the case of Green Lantern. Old-Timers HATED what was done to Hal Jordan's character. It's been 10 years since Kyle Rayner got the ring and now people who like his character hate that Hal Jordan's coming back.
What I give props to DC for is, the writers are trying to acheive the balance. They seem to respect the old stuff, while working in the Post Crisis/Zero Hour universe.
Marvel needs to have a similar balance. For instance on the DC side, the death of Barry Allen has resonated in the DCUniverse.
Marvel has has very big storylines that, when they are over, there is little ripple or aftereffect. They are (dare I write this) TOO respectful (in some ways, but not all) of the Lee/Kirby era.
The ULTIMATEs universe is a way to play with the Lee/Kirby flavor of Marvel, but do something TOTALLY different.
Kurt Busiek is a writer who had a knack for taking the old and doing something with it. He's not at Marvel any more. His Avengers Forever mini-series was a perfect balance of taking what was done before and weaving a new and different story out of the material.
Geoff Johns was at Marvel signed an Exclusive with DC. I don't think he had a chance to cut loose. Judd Winck was at Marvel went exclusive to DC. Jeff Loeb is kicking butt with the Superman/Batman book at DC (he also works on Smallville)
I'm rambling, but the facts are its not about the medium of COMICS, but creating fodder for LICENSING.
