Here are a few questions to start you on your quest for enlightenment and deeper levels of frustration:
1)Have you purchased a copy of Curious Labs' Poser, or installed the free program, DAZ Studio? (Sometimes newbees try to use our free download files without the necessary rendering program software.)
2)What figure models are you trying to use in your rendering program? There are a variety including P-4 Man and Woman, various Michael and Victoria figures, P-5 Don and Judy, P-6 James and Jessi, Maya Doll, The Girl, Apollo Maximus, The Freak, Miki, Dina, Vina, and a host of other model figures.
3)Do you know what a texture map is?
4)Do you know what a morph target is?
5)Is there a particuilar free download file you have an interest in?

So you are starting from zero on the learning curve? I've been there a while back. Lets see how I can explain this without becoming a commercial product endorsement.
To get started do a Google search and see if there's a downloadable free demo of Curious Lab's Poser program on the Curious Labs site. I've also seen the demo offered in 3D World Magazine. The demo works for a 30 day trial period, and has one functional character figure. If you purchase the complete version of the program, you will have a variety of human, cartoon, robotic, and animal figures to use and customize for your own still image renders, and animations. Looking through the gallery and the store on this site will help give you an idea of what you can do with the program.
The ability to customize your figures is the essence of the program. The figures I've mentioned are all different three dimensional puppets with moveable joints and body parts. Inside the Poser program's work window, you can pose your models a part at a time like an old fashioned Ray Harryhausen movie monster, or apply a pre-programmed pose from the program's library.
The program's ability to change texture maps on your figures is one of the stongest features allowing you to customize your figures. A texture map is an image of a flattened projection of the figure's outer covering. If you were Dr. Hannibal "the cannibal" Lecter, and you took a photo of one of your victim's stretched out skin, the photo would be similar to a texture map.
A morph target (or morph) is a piece of custom geometry you can apply to a figure which allows you to change its shape. Typically the morphs available for humun figures will do things like increase muscularity, make belly buttons disappear, change the toes into the end of a shoe, open the figure's mouth, make the figure's eyes blink, make the face change expression, or create pointed Vulcan ears.
On Animotions we have a lot of free downloads for use with various human figure models. The older downloads for the Poser 4 figures are usually complete figures you can play with if you already have Poser. The newer downloads for the more advanced DAZ-3D figures are mostly texture and prop sets for you to apply to your own figures by yourself.

Deathtrap - You are asking information about something that most of us have been doing for years, and taken years to learn.
Asking for help means reading the information given, or dont bother getting into the hobby of working in 3D. It takes time, patience, practice and again...more patience.
Here is a short answer for you.
Answer - GO BUY POSER.
Answer 2 - THEN READ THE MANUAL. _________________ =============================
