It means I had extra prizes and you came in one vote under the other entry in that slot. Don't look a gift horse in the mummy. ;] |

WOO-HOO!!
Thanks to the judges and to all the folks who left so many encouraging and supportive comments on my image. It was a blast putting that together -- I did a lot of homework looking at 1950s sci-fi posters to try and get the right feel for everything from the layout to the typography to the use of language. I guess it paid off!
Congratulations to all the other winners-- there were some fabulous entries in this contest.
And big thanks to Animotions for continuing to support the digital art community and for coming up with such inspiring contest themes. Awesome job, everybody. |

My one observation is that everyone who won had the following elements in common;
1) Posters featured titles and credits.
2) several included things like "technicolor" or "filmed in" sub-headings.
3) They are all distinctly mid to late 1950's in style.
My chosen reference material was;

Mostly because i love horror and sci-fi. |

I think your image is excellent. That said, I think the lack of credits and other signifiers suggesting a film poster is what probably hurt you with the judges. It reminds me more of a 1950s/1960s-style book cover than a movie poster as a result.
First thing I did after reading the rules was go here:
http://www.mad-monsters.com/Posters/index.html
and soak up as much reference as I could, cherry picking the elements I wanted to emulate. Sci-fi posters of the 50s/60s had a pretty unique aesthetic. |

WOW! I'm thankful! Speaking as the self disqualified contestant, I'm grateful for the "just for entering" prize--as well as an official No Prize. I shall set it with honor next to my Marvel No Prize and my WIBC Empty Envelope! |

Recheck the contest parameters.
Can't speak for all the judges, since like everyone else, I just got one vote per image, but I would image it's simple: while your image was good, it didn't fit the theme - it didn't look like a movie poster, and definately not like a 50's/60's sci-fi film poster.
They have a definate "look" to them.
Your pic would have made a decent CD cover, in a CD cover design contest.
Admittedly, a few of the other entries IMO were a bit late-70's/80's pulp in "look", but I didn't attempt to exert any influence on the judging on that: I just let the other judges read the contest description and use their own judgement.
Look, "feel", creativity, originality, and design elements were what I looked for when I made my choices: with extra touches like good actornames and creative use of vendor names for F/X credits etc getting extra attention. |
