Very fastest but lowest general quality in a non-standalone is Poser4's built-in renderer.

Best quality and fastest, but it's still in beta/pre-release stage is the Daz Studio renderer available in the free Daz Studio download at Daz3D. That one also has some figure handling and posing capability, so it might be worth playing around with.

Cinema4D has an excellent renderer with an also excellent modeling package. It's reasonably expensive, but it will do radiousity, raytrace, caustics, and most of the nifty rendering features. It's reasonably fast. You can often find older full versions of C4D being given away on 3D magazine CD's.

Bryce is an excelent renderer and scenery creation package in the low priced range... but it's slow. Vue is also similar in pricing, and a bit faster.

Poser 6 has a better renderer than P4, but IMO, it's still not up to Bryce, Cinema, or D|S quality, and reports have it that it's still glitchy.

From there you go UP in price and capability through all of the rest of the software packages and modelers and standalone renderer. Lightscape, for example, is one of the best standalone renderers available, but it takes a long time to pre-calc a scene, and it's *not* inexpensive.
