I've been kicking this idea around for a few days and wanted to share it with someone, so who else better than the animotions crew.

Justice Lords: An Elsewhere tale

It would begin with the death of Superman. This time the Eradicator would malfunction and never leave the fortress...but more on that later. Things progress in the DCU normally without the presence of the Eradicator until Mongul comes to Earth and the destruction of Coast City. Without the appearence of Superman, Steel dies and Green Lantern ends up bringing the tyrant to justice. Soon after, filled with grief GL reveals his secret identity to the world, he eventually changes costumes (0ne without mask and a cape, but with current GL costume design, cape coming from green portion).

Batman in a battle with Bane doesn't get his back broken, during the battle he escapes before his back is broken, tired and exhausted he attempts to hide in the shadows to recover his strength, in the darkness he finds a pistol right before Bane discovers him. Beaten again and nearly dead, Batman does the unthinkable and shoots Bane...dead. Following his battle Bruce Wayne is confronted by Wonder Woman who tells him she understands, but Bruce can't take it. The next day Wayne Manor burns down and Bruce is nowhere to be found.

A year later, Green Lantern, Earth's greatest hero is locked in a battle with Hector Hammond, during the battle the Paralax finds a new host in Hammond. It takes the entire Justice League to defeat him as a result of the battle, half the JLA die and disband, the Green Lantern Corps loses 75% of their number.

In Gotham, Nightwing (with a modified costume resembling Batman's) Grayson inherited the Wayne fortune and he and Tim Drake patrol Gotham. A vigalante surfaces who kills his victims, the Joker is killed by this mysterious figure. Nightwing can tell by the crime scene that he never put up a fight, he simply laughed himself to death.

Wonder Woman isn't replaced by Artemis and as she continues the good fight, she becomes more violent in her ways. She finally snaps and many of her long time foes pay the price. Cheetah is among them. The Flash is the one who eventually brings her to justice. Speaking of justice, the Justice Society is killed by Modoru, the only survivor being Captain Marvel.

A year later, Nightwing and the Flash discuss the violent swing many of the heroes have taken. The hero known as Arsenal's Teen Titans are killed by their former teamate Jericho and the Wilderbeast Society. In Alantis, Aquaman face of military coup.

Finally during the War of Worlds, Superman returns. His costume more Kryptonian based. Once the war is over he reforms the Justice League all is well until people discover Superman is very cold and distant. Nightwing surmises it is because the absense of Clark Kent.

Luthor forms a Society of Evil. Among the members are Doomsday, Superion (formerly Superboy), Braniac, Deathstroke, Solomen Grundy, Zoom, and a new male Chetah. The society attacks the the moon base and the league is handed their collective butts.

Superman must act. He frees Wonder Woman from jail. The mysterious vigalante haunting Gotham's streets is in fact Bruce Wayne, a very scary Batman. Green Lantern joins but is very worried about Superman's "logical" choices for a team. Hawkman, an outcast Aquaman and a new Firestorm round off the team.

The League fights the Society and is victorious. After the battle Wonder Woman suggest that they be killed like the rabid dogs they are. Superman agrees and his eyes glow red. Green Lantern attempts to stop him, Batman and Wonder Woman restrain him until the task is done. GL screams that this isn't what the Justice League is about, Superman replies "You're right, this is about order, this is about Justice in it's purest form, the Justice League is dead and if you don't want to be the same, you won't oppose us...the Justice Lords." Green Lantern is let go. Two months later, the Justice Lords rule the earth, many have joined their ranks, among them a notable is Black Adam. They watch over the Earth from their moon base. On Earth a restance force of heroes that didn't join the Justice Lords forms.

OK, DONE MY PART....SOMEONE ELSE CONTINUE

wow... quite a bloodbath. I see you tend towards dark and bleak settings in your stuff.

I can see some kind of secondary sinister plot that no one is aware of, one that explains the increased hostility of some of the characters like Arnsenel, Wonder Woman, etc. Something that works on the subconscious level, like Starros' mind control or something akin to it (I was thinking some kind of hive-mind or shared consciousness nano-creature or machine, possibly based off a new character. It gets into your head literally, like a parasite). This is the real power pulling the strings, feeding on the hostility and tension created by events and can act as a common foe once somebody starts making connections.

As a spur to hostility what about the various hero/ines having their drinks spiked with testosterone -
Only kidding lads!

Yes, I like the mind parasite idea - a race of transuniverse emotophages feeding on hate and anger who are moving in on our reality and earth as a potential farm/food factory.

They would be non-material beings (in this universe) generally invisible to the naked eye but with the power to manipulate their victims thought processes making them paranoid and delusional.

Maybe the aliens are shadow counterparts of everyone in our reality that have to map their forms onto that of their victims in order to control them

Maybe (non super power) humanity has already fallen but nobody has noticed

It would be very difficult at first to know who had been taken over and who not - could you even trust yourself - if you were suspicious of your colleagues was this because you yourself had become infected by your shadow?

The storyline could be an interesting commentary on all sorts of current situations, as well as the principles of Natural Justice.

In a lot of ways it sounds a lot like the Justice Lords episode of Justice League Unlimited but it does spin it in other ways. But it is a pretty dark tale.

Heck, you could even bring theology into it: the bit about
Quote:

...
Maybe (non super power) humanity has already fallen but nobody has noticed
sounds very much like what most folk just call Demons. And if there are fallen angels, what of unfallen? Species-identical to the threat but fundamentally different: good, righteous, holy, just, and at war already in their world and "ours" with these apparent parasites. Of course, their tactics are different, too...

Shades of Babylon 5 ...
I wouldn't rush to posit the 'demons' as evil more than any other being - they are just doing what they need to survive - and if the 'angels' (being species identical) also feed on emotions - even positive ones like love - that would mean that their actions in fighting the demons would be more like a turf battle than anything more idealistic.

Alternatively the twist could be that any 'angelic' helpers are actually the alien equivalent of vegetarians or Animal Rights activists - they need to feed on emotions but are trying to create ways of artificially inducing emotions that can be harvested without risk to the animal - maybe they run the film industry!

I'm liking the demon/parasite twist as well but in this case I'd put the Angels behind Superman coming back as well as the actions of our heroes...while the demons aid our freedom fighters.
But to put it in the realm of the DCU. The Lords of Order (Nabu and his ilk) and the Lords of Chaos. It actually makes sense since the Superman and the Justice Lords are establishing World Order, perhaps even a new female Doctor Fate on the Justice Lords and a male Aurakle (remember Halo of the outsiders) also laying claim to the name on the sides of the Freedom Fighters. Now, let's discuss who the Freedom Fighters are:
Nightwing is a shoe in he leads the group.
Guy Gardner, an older wiser but still our Guy!
ok...your turn!

I'd add Huntress to the rebels list. Same with Oliver Queen/Green Arrow. He's never been that great with authority figures.

They need a heavy hitter too... hmmm... toughie.

I also offer a 3rd group, one who sided with neither of the big players and ends up intially in more of an observatory position and sees the big picture (that everyone's being manipulated) and later act on this information.

So far I have:
-Oracle: because she is a position of sifting a lot of data, she might notice the pattern.

-Martian Manhunter: because of his alien physiology that's even more alien than Superman's and his own mental abilities, he might notice the manioulation and can resist it.

-Green Lantern: Having left the League/Lords, but not ready to join the rebels, he ends up latching up with this group.

-At least one villain type, but I'm not sure who. Needs to be someone pretty smart and a little "off". I was thinking Riddler (I have an odd affection for the character) but there's probably someone better.

(BTW: It's pure coincidence that this group is prodominently green, unless you DO beleive in conspiracies ;) )

But don't y'all see? The "Angels" don't manipulate. They guide those who are willing to seek the Truth, and fight the "Demons" in large measure to release the demons' hosts/victims from manipulation. It's not simply a matter of "beings feeding on emotions": the enemy (demons) are objectively Evil and the angels (who'd have a lesser role) objectively Good.

But is it the Justice Lords or the rebels (so-called "Freedom Force") who are hosting the parasites, or perhaps both? Demons may fight demons even in hell... (Thinking of which, if this ain't DC-only, I want Hellboy on the side of the Angels! ;) )

As for your token villian, GG: Catwoman.

I like the "Third Party" suggestion. I'd add two or three angelic personae in the background of each side, (and not necessarily as clear-cut a split) thus:

*Angels vs. **Demons (also some Demons vs. other Demons: Hell hath no honor code.) Asterisked characters are Angelics.
and
Justice Lords vs Freedom Fighters.

JL Roster as follows (with some of my own suggestions):
Superman
WonderWoman
Black Adam
Black Bat (Mr. Wayne, in a new suit)
Alfred (yes, the Alfred!)
*Raphael
Aquaman
*Avriel
*St. Michael (Cdr. of Angels)
Atom
Flash
The Penguin
**Mephistopheles (a dangerous wildcard, but sometimes useful-- had a falling-out with higher-ups Down Below. He is perhaps too high in the counsels of the JL, but St. Mike etc. keep a short leash on him.)
Steel
Hawkman (though still avoiding Black Adam: not all of the JSA is dead...)
Red Son

... etc.

Freedom Fighters roster (so far, plus suggestions):
Green Lantern (Oliver Queen)
Nightwing
Huntress
**Appolyon
Clayface (this work for your Heavy Hitter, GG?)
**Baal-Zebub (this guy'd have a thing for flies...)
Lex Luthor (having been rescued by Bizzaro)
Bizzaro (juiced with both Green and Black K, he's now a serious nemesis and not just comic relief)
Hawkgirl
Captain Marvel
Green Arrow
** Old Scratch
Hector Hammond (**Parrallax)
... etc.

The Green Grail Society (anyone recognize those initials?):
Green Lantern (John Stewart)
Oracle
J'onn J'onnz
Catwoman
Riddler
... etc

The Archangel idea I like but instead of them being in the group they would actually be in (italics, I don't know how to do it) the group.

Luthor would have to try to betray Nightwing, Nightwing would have to had planned for that eventual betrayel which would end up with the Freedom Fighters fighting amongst themselves. (That would be an end of a chapter) Of course we'd have to see the fight and watch as Luthor slinks away half way through the battle. The perfect time for the Justice Lords to bust in to wipe out the freedom fighters. (end of another chapter...I hate/love waiting for a resolution that stakes seem to get higher and higher as each month goes by).

We'd of course open the next chapter with complete chaos, as there are three teams fighting against each other, Luthor's Freedom Fighters vs. Nightwing's Freedom Fighters vs. the Justice Lords, as heroes fall one by one on each side the former villains seem to have endurance, that's when you notice that the villains never engaged another villain. Luthor comes out, smiles and the villains form on him. Nightwing is momentarily distracted and is brained by Hawkman, Luthor notices that Nightwing is still alive and his unconscios body has fallen between the battling Captain Marvel and Black Adam. Luthor takes a device out of his pocket and whispers "Shazam" the bolt not only changes both Marvels human (who Luthor shoots dead before they can call the lightning down again) it also incenerates Nightwing's body. Black Bat sees this and screams, he leaps in the air and kills his own teamate Hawkman, he then stands crying over the place where his former ward's body was incenerated.
End of Chapter

The Battle rages on and finally the GGS intervenes. Through the combined power of the laterns and the Martian Manhunter the angels are driven out of all their host. The heroes now in their right minds begin to take down the villains. The Martian Manhunter exhausted from the exorcism is out during the battle. Finally our heroes stand together and defeat the villains, when it is all over Martian Manhunter screams..."Nooooo, it's not over yet..." he is cut down by two twin beams of fire. Superman still possesed by the fallen Archangel Michael smiles and says "no not by a Longshot" end of another chapter.

This is it, our remaining heroes vs. Archangel Superman/Michael. They put up a good fight most notably Wonder Woman but in the end...both Lanterns are dead, The Atom is missing, Wonder Woman is barel alive, when Supes takes hold of Oracle, Alfred then reveals himself not be Alfred but the long thought dead Nabu, he hasn't much power he states but what little he had, he used. Superman/Michael laughs..."Why tell me this? Yes, you are old Nabu, but I and my kind were here before the stars had light and perhaps if the Marvels had stood together they may have had a chance, now you tell me who you are (so I can kill you of course) but even better you tell me that you have already used the remainder of your power...and pray tell what did you use it on?"

Alfred/Nabu smiles "shazam" Michael/Superman says "laughs and says did you just say Shazam..." and with that a bolt of lightning comes down. Nabu/Alfred then laughs "I had enough power to put it together but I need you to say the word to make it complete."

Brightwing (Dick Grayson) Costume White and Gold, where it had been Black and Blue, wings of solid light.

Oracle smiles and whispers "I wish Roy could be here to finally see you get your wings."

Brightwing looks towards her and smiles, he then turns his attention to Archangel/Superman and it's on!

The first third of the ending would be of Brightwing beating Superman.
The second the Justice Legion is formed. Brightwing the leader, a new Alien Green Laterns in it's ranks.
The third part, shows other heroes retiring, the very last page would show Atom, laughing "ok, the mortals win this round, but all they really did is clear out my ancient enemies" a pitchfork appears in his hand and a tail appears..."now for a thousand years of peace"

THE EVER LOVING END....THOUGHTS?
