So, the November Challenge is to create your own, original fighting character in the vein of Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Dead Or Alive, Tekken, Virtua Figher, etc.
That is the quick version, here is the longer one
I was disappointed by the lack of fighting games out recently, it seemed like everything was a first person shooter, etc. I have always wanted to make my own so I proposed the challenge.
I want something that is deep, fun and that will last me for a while rather than just the time it takes to unlock stuff and see endings. I want something that has a story (but not too much of one), that makes me interested and that doesn't leave me going WTF with the final battle. So, that leaves us here.
Here is a bit more, needless, history. A number of years ago there was a Street Fighter roleplaying game based in the storytelling game system of White Wolf. It was fun and not as deep as the main world of darkness stuff but it had a lot of the same mechanics and I started thinking "What would happen if Zangief were to fight a werewolf" etc. Silly fun but then I though about a secret fighting society that has been around for centuries, headed by a former Roman gladiator turned vampire. He has been around for centuries, learning, pitting people against each other and observing from the shadows.
That is the base idea. You would have create-a-fighter options but you would also have a good set of standard characters. It would start off with low level fights that get you noticed. Bar fights, prison yards, dojos, karate competitions, etc. If you do well, you get approached by a stranger with a card. He tells you the basics about having a rich client that enjoys fights and he is interested in seeing more.
You then get elevated to mid card and fight some of the other characters, if you continue to do well you get another visit from the stranger. (If you stink you get bumped back down for a bit.) He offers you a first class ticket to the next stage where you will fight some more elite fighters on a private island in the Mediterranean. Great location, great competition, you figure "what the heck?"
The next stages start out interesting but fairly standard, you have some night matches where you see the owner, but other than that is pretty island matches and sunning and sand and some great competition. It then gets a bit weird with hearing strange noises at night, etc. Competitions that sound kind of animalistic, brutal, etc. It then gets really weird as you start fighting werewolves, vampires, cyborgs and whatever else we want to toss in.
At any point if you start getting beaten constantly you have the chance of getting knocked back and during the final stages if you do well but not well enough you can get bitten, etc. Changing the way it plays but still building on the character that you have. If you don't loose you can then play as yourself, obviously.
You are then can take on the big bad gladiator as the final stage, etc. It makes some sense and isn't some random demon or spirit clone from out of nowhere.
That is my idea ... I wanted a lot of if/then statements (in old basic computer code lingo) in it for branching and character development.
So, if you beat Guy A five times he starts to dislike you, if you are a brutal fighter but kind of stink at the end you have a higher chance of getting bitten by a werewolf, more of a finesse fighter you have more of a chance of getting bitten by a vamp, if you get damaged you can be rebuilt by our own resident Frankenstein. Lots of fun to be had but it goes in a way that I haven't really seen and can be deeper with the if/then statements. Soul Calibur had some story cinematics that played up random feuds but these feuds would be based on a reason, etc and could be incorporated into cinematics to some degree.
Just my ideas ... Hope I haven't scared anyone away but you can definitely just do what you want with it and ignore all of this past the first sentence
My response (Since I figured we would move it maybe)
Mostly character designs ... anything else is sort of gravy.
I figured it might be hard to make things that could go in totally the same spot because some people might have this file from Stonemason but others wouldn't, etc. Same thing for others. But it might be fun to have "fights" with the characters later on ... For example, I really like your Asian karate girl and I have the stuff to make her so I challenge her to a fight with my big wrestling guy and we work out a scene.
But the original idea was just character designs .. Toss in a favorite location to make it a picture but it is mostly the character stuff that we are looking at ... I guess

Here is my example.
Mac Savage
A prize fighter with a bone to pick with everyone, Mac was on his way to to the top, when he accidentally killed his opponent in the ring. It was an accident but he had said he was going to kill him earlier that evening and their rivalry had gotten out of hand. He was convicted and served 25 years in prison. Now he is attempting to get back some of his former glory. Even though he is past his prime, he can still keep a good pace with many of his younger opponents and he picked up a few new tricks and styles in the joint.

Yeah sorry Ghost- That was my doing. Thought maybe it would get more attention, since the challenges havent had much action lately, and the ideas have been top notch.
Sorry =) _________________ =============================
