Hello folks,
I'm itching to try my hand with 3D comics using Poser,Vue and Photoshop7. I've got a good grasp of Poser and Vue but I'm shaky with PS7. I'm looking mainly for helpful advice on the best ways of creating panel layouts, layering effects and formatting tricks. Anyone know where I could find help?
thanks, Fin |

| In Comic freestuff here(misc. section) you can find the premade panel layers in psd format. I haven't come across any tutorials though, sorry. |

Thanks, Vulcanis.
I have Crescent's panel and someone else had one (Quagnon?) that I think I grabbed a while back.
Though, I did discover that Sturkwurk and others have their own sites with tutorials.
Are there any 3D comics resource sites? I found one a while back that had photoshop tips and darnit I can't remember what it's called. Oh well,
Thanks for the tip Vulcanis. |

I have several tutorials at my site. They aren't specifically geared towards 3D comics, but they explain various techniques that can be applied to that type of project.

I did recall someone having a page devoted to creating special effects (geared toward comics) in Photoshop... I remember specifically a tute on creating energy blasts using a separate layer on 'Screen', and if I recall right, it was something near ridiculously helpful. But for the life of me, I can't remember the address.
I'm prepping to go to work now, but when I get home tonight I'll see if I can look the place up and give you a link. _________________ "It is perfectly easy to be original by violating the laws of decency and the canons of good taste."

Found it!
Okay, it's not devoted to Photoshop Effects, per se, but it does have a small selection of tutorials for comic- and anime-style effects through Photoshop.
The place is PolyKarbon, located at http://www.polykarbon.com/
Click on tutorials and look on the right hand side, and you'll see it about a screen and a half down. PolyK. also has details on coloring hand-drawns through photoshop, which is interesting and cool, too.
You can also do searches on Google for +"comic" +"photoshop" +"tips"... although I don't know how many were really valuable, I did get a bunch of hits in response to that search to find PolyKarbon.
Hope that helps!

please dont use the premade comic book panels in the free stuff. . .they need to be relabled as premade comic Strip panels which often must be uniform in shape. Go and buy some main stream books or dig through your collection if you have one and note the panel layout. Also check out the book understanding comics by scott McCloud.
Dont do your panel layout in PS7 unless you are planning to do naught but a web comic and then you need to consider your layout diferently. A web comic should be done in the popular browswer size, right now that is 800x600 or 1024x768. You also need to keep in miind that you cant use some tricks form the printed page quiver, like the multi-page splash. If you want to print your book, do your layout in Illustrator and save it as a PDF, take it to kinkos and wham, there you are.
As a devotee to the recent trend in cinematic comic booking (and to get a good idea of what i mean look at some of the newer books out there and comapre them to the books that were being made 15 years ago) i really enjoy the concepts of 3d comic booking. My early training was in photography and my later education was in 3d animation soooo i look at things in a cinemtatic sense anyway. |

Heya Fin,
I know this is a way old thread to jump in on but I couldn't resist. If you haven't already started a comic...try using the various comics that are already out to give you a feel. You can learn alot from observing what others are doing. Take note of what works, and what doesn't. Are the images easy to look at? Is there chaos on the page? What stands out? What doesn't? Can it be read?
To start ya out: www.blambot.com check out the tute section comics101, plus you can pick up some great fonts.
Hope that helps a bit... _________________ PANdaRUS

one good site I always resource to (for photoshop tips):
http://www.good-tutorials.com
as far as learning how to do comics, i pretty much read manga every single day... but if american comics is your thing, then read as many comics as you can, study the layouts, the point of views, etc... I just like the more cinematic feel and self-descriptive aspect of japanese comics...
and I do lay out everything in photoshop 7... you can then turn the .psd file into a .pdf file, so i don't really see a problem with future paper printing with that. _________________ **************
