A lot of you guys seem younger thean my thirty years and Anime has changed a lot over the years. I can still remember climbing into my mother's bed in kindergarten to watch Speed Racer every day before school and that will always be one of my favorite memories. But I have always been partial to the more cerebral Anime. Specifically Cowboy Bebop. With the music, original plot lines, and well defined characters I find it to be one of the greatest Anime seris ever created. The movie did not carry the same edge as the manga or the seris. Also on my list is a cartoon that isn't really Anime being that it is American in origin but I believe it deserves to be mentioned and that is Samurai Jack. Never have I seen a cartoon so artfully done. With such simplicity in the actual character drawings a whole believable world is opened before me. And one can even "watch" Samurai Jack just by listening to the background sounds. The leaves rustling in the wind. The dripping of icicles into the stream. And of course the amazing portrayal of Aku by veteran actor Mako. Genndy Tartakovsky has finally shown that good Anime doesn't just come from Japan.
I won't even touch the samurai jack. But I do remember watching speed racer on channel 13 when the channel would fuzz out and another channel that also played degassi junior high ( this was when we only had 13 stations and channel 8 was a conneticutt(sp) station).

Well, I'm not on my 30's yet, but I consider south america is been quite lucky over the years in what respects to Anime. (oh damn, rusty english...)
I would watch reall classics when I was a very little, 5 or so, and most of them got to us uncut. I was a huge fan of a not to popular series ther in the states, or anywhere except Japan and Europe, named Captain harlock, space pirate! By master Reiji Matsumoto. It's unbelieveabable how, after the years, I find all that this particular series has influententited me in materia both of graphic art and of writting.
If I had to pick something more from these days, then it would get hard, I'd have to consider a lot more of things I've learned to aprecieate and appraise over the years (who could just sit back and enjoy a good Anime like in the good old days!?), so I have to put in teh same bag completely diferent things, like Cowboy bebop (I had a dog that look just like Ein, so I nearly cry every time I watch the show, and that kinda keeps me away from it ), My neighbor Totoro, inu Yasha, Envagelion or Love Hina.
But Harlock has new series coming around every now and then, so I guess I have to stick with my heart and go to the endless space, free as a pirate. _________________ "Nobody moves! I dropped my brain!"
Well I have to say growing up it was all about Mezinger Z and Robotech. I remmeber the DVDs were announced I went to Amazon to preorder them.
Now that I am an adult (well age-wise I am), I like Inu Yasha, Full Metal Alchemist (Japanese version) and Evangalion. These dont compare to Robotech, but they are entertaining and have some of the best stories going, well atleast as translations go.

I have two favorites: Cowboy Bebop and GITS: Stand Alone Complex.
I think Bebop get's my top slot, though. It has a unique "feel" to it, kinda like an old gumshoe movie.
I also grew up with the anime from the 60's and 70's, but I didn't really think much of it. It's seemed, I don't know... rather cheesy and unfinished.
Then I saw my first feature length anime film. I believe it was Akirra. I was hooked from that point on, and started to get into anime series with similar artistic styles.

In terms of series, I'd have to agree that Robotech is up there. I have the Rick Hunter series and the New Generation Series. I skipped the masters because the mechs were silly looking and the characters were like barbie dolls.
There's also Gasaraki and Record of Lodoss War.
In terms of movies, well...
It's all about the new Appleseed movie. Check out:
Visually amazing... the story is... well did I mention that it's visually amazing?
Also in terms of movies who can forget Akira. Akira revolutionized anime by stepping the quality of rendering and the animation up a zillion notches in major motion picture anime.
Ghost in the Shell 1+2 are awesome...
Lastly, I'd have to say Jin-Roh. Didn't seem to be very popular, but it's probably the only anime movie I've seen with a deep philosophical story which worked for me. Most of the time you just have to ignore all the depth in anime movies because it defies translation or is simply badly implemented.
Ghost in the Shell. (Yes. There is a series.)
Crest of the Stars
Betterman
Lain
Gatchaman (G-Force to American Audiences)
Speedracer was probably the first on I liked.
Except for Ghost most of my anime exerience comes from TechTV Anime Unleashed. That was before the dark times of G4.
I never really got into Cowboy Beebop, but I watched it.
Then there's obscure stuf like RANMA1/2 and of course, "Legend of the Overfiend".
Technically a "series" of films... but still aseries.
I too weep for the loss of TechTV. Adam Sessler even made a joke about it lamenting the loss on a recent episode of X-Play. I was surprised that they allowed it in the show as it was a very Anti-G4 comment.

Hey everyone, I've been away for a while due to computer problems last year. Finally found my login name and password after almost pulling my hair out for the last few months.
Oy.. I am an airhead hehe.
Gatchaman.. I used to be crazy about that when I was little, I saw some recently and had the most wonderful nostalgia fix and oddly enough I did have some of my hair green once.. yea, I was the Gatchaman lady.
When anime found me again late 80s I've been keeping my toes wet since and found some great series Lodoss War, Lain, Witch Hunter Robin, Chobits, Read or Die, Sol Bianca (woohoo!), Cardcaptor Sakura, Somedays Dreamers, GITS Stand ALone Complex, Silent Mobius, 3x3 Eyes, Vampire Princess Miyu, Gunbuster, and the wonderful Haibane Renmei.
Three movies I highly recommend just in case you haven't seen them. Perfect Blue. Ah! My goddess. Wonderful days.

I can't really think of a series I liked that much. Perhaps Bubblegum Crisis but I really do like a lot of the things like Wings of Honiemas (sp) and Porco Russo etc.
I have a couple of questions though. I am looking for a good fantasy Anime, sort of along the lines of Final Fantasy. Any recomendations?
Also, I have seen lots of people complain about the loss of Tech TV but I never really watched it except once or twice and my parents house. I was a G4 person so I am really wondering what is so bad about the combined thing? Just wondering.
The level of intelligence and creativity in G4 shows and personalities just isn't there. A lot of their shows simply exist to plug video games and bad video games at that. Their equivalent of X-Play, Judgement Day is just not as intellgently written, as clever, or as fun to watch as X-Play. It does give you a more detailed view of the game being reviewed, but has far less intelligent things to say about it. They also, almost never, ever rate a game below a 5, where you'll be lucky to find an episode of X-Play that doesn't tear every game apart (which any reviewing show should since most games, like Hollywood movies, are garbage).
The Screensavers was a lot more useful and down to Earth before it hit G4. After every episode, my PC ran a little better. They were also far more real about things, sometimes even advocating how to hack parts of your system that were questionably legal to hack (but they never advocated anything blatantly illegal).
They had several shows, Call for Help, Fresh Gear, and another show about tech news that were really good. All cancelled. Call for Help was awesome as it gave some of the best computer advice I've ever seen. Fresh Gear was brutally honest about the gadgets it reviewed, often doing things like throwing them in the garbage when they were bad.
Also the channel wasn't rife with women in low cut tops. The women they did have were intelligent, well spoken, and dressed professionally or in a punk style depending on who they were. They clearly weren't there only because they were attractive (like that girl on Filter or the ditzy girl on G4tv.com).
It was simply a better, smarter, more clever television experienced and is sorely missed by many TechTV fans.
