Lectatege, I think the old B&W Brit film you're talking about may well be Devil Doll.

I've probably seen this at some point in the past, though I can't be absolutely sure. I've seen several of those ventriloquist-doll-comes-to-life type films.

They can be pretty creepy to be sure, though I can at least watch them- a mate's ex-girlfriend was so freaked out by the idea it was practically a phobia.

Sometimes Hollywood actually gets the casting right. Ron Perlman IS Hellboy. Jessica Alba ISn't Sue Storm. Perhaps because Frank Miller had a hand, the casting in Sin City is almost perfect. You could just about imagine the books illustrated the film.

This new Superman? No. In fact, Dean Cain no.

No, I don't think it was called devil doll because the ventriloquist's dummy was only one of the stories - it was one of those 'four creepy tales' compendium type films - one of the other shorts involved a guy having a dream about a bus with Death as the conductor calling 'room for one more inside'.

Can anyone help me with this as its starting to bug me!

Sounds like a Hammer portmanteau film to me, but no idea which one. Often hosted by Peter Cushing or Christopher Lee. Quick Google only produces Devil Doll and the TV series.

Got it!

It was 'Dead of Night', and not Hammer now I come to think on but Ealing.
Really really scary - have somebody to go to bed with afterwards!

phew!

I'm a Hammer fanatic so I guessed it wasn't a Hammer film, but now you've come to mention it I do remember seeing one of those stories in a portmanteau. The one I'm thinking of here was a '70's one I think.

It looks like Dead of Night is one I haven't actually seen, and boy have I seen a shocking amount. They used to put this sort of thing on TV all the time, why not now?
