Bit of a drift, but one thing about the revived Doctor Who I really liked was DALEK: turned that silly pepper-pot thing into a bloody Terminator.

Well yes you see, as pathological killing machines with an obsession for racial purity, we find we often get a bad press.

There was an attempt on the 80's by the media to downplay our threat potential and portray us as helpless little robots.

Fortunately since our employment of a new PR company our reputation is being restored.

Ok for a few years we did have a problem with stairs and needed minions to run round with sheets of plywood to lay before us whem we went over anything rougher than vinyl flooring.

But now since our invention of CGI! We will wipe the floor with the lot of you! With our new improved sink plungers YOU WILL BE THE SUCKERS!

Oh and we also do small plumbing jobs at reasonable rates. Call Skaro 113311.

I am, but I keep getting the IVR:

"For genocide, press 1.
For genocide, press 2.
For genocide, press 3.
For genocide, press 4.

All our operators are presently invading. Please hold."

One for Ironbear and Crocket Fans! Davy's legend still lives on in the Western Australian Outback! Great great great grandson, Robert Lee Crocket won The Stockman of the year award for his outstanding work with quarter horses! Sadly he has just passed away at the grand old age of 85! His daughter Judy said he died of a broken heart because he couldn't get his plastic leg over the saddle anymore. He lost his original leg after many falls from his horse in many rodeo events.
The English went absolutely berserk when they took the ashes back from the Aussies after 14 years! The whole of London shut down for a couple of days while they rejoiced! No shortage of national spirit on that day!

Home is where the heart is and the paycheck and the refridgerator and the guitar and the computer and cat and the wife. . . not in that order.

I guess I am the odd man out in this group. Born in southern California, lived here 24 year then moved to Seattle WA. I have been to mexico (briefly) and Canada often. I have been back in southern California since I was 26 and now actually live in central California (santa barbara). If it were not for my love i wouldnt be here. She was the only thing that could have got me to move to Santa Barbara this place is too nice, too conservative and totally lacking in a middle class.

But it is pretty and the weather is clement. Unless i am living in Seattle (my favorite city) again then one place in the US is much like another to me. i would pack up in a heart beat and take a job in another country and wouldnt even need to tink twice about it if it were the UK, France or Germany.

Maybe this is a culture gap thing Digitalmagi but I thought that being too nice and too conservative was the epitome of middle class behaviour?

Lower middle at least?

By no middle class i mean that there is no social middle class in Santa Barbara. The average cost of a small home here (approx 1000sq ft) is now close to 1.5 mil. There are two types of people, for the msot part, who live in SB. The very wealthy or the poor. Meaning most of us have an income under 25k a year. This place is more expensive to live in that either San Francisco or New York.

There are only 5 theaters in town and only 2 of them have more then 2 screens. The city does not allow large shopping centers so we have hundreds of small expensive boutiques. There isnt much to do in town unless you like going to bars and rubbing elbows with the university students and the tourists.

Savvy?

This place drives me crazy. i am looking forward to when we can leave it in the dust.

Kind of...

In the UK we are rather anti large shopping malls, not in favour of small expensive boutiques I hasten to add, but small independent businesses - greengrocers, butchers, bakers, wet fish shops, ironmongers, corner shops and the like.

Its a rearguard action against being totally swamped by the big international supermarkets and stores.
Maybe its too late for that over the pond?

Also small two (or even one!) screen cinemas are quaint 1930's flea pits and held in nostalgic esteem as opposed to the big multiscreen jobs which only ever seem to show the 'top' five films of the day.
(although they do have air con which is worth the price of admission alone in this weather!)

Santa Barbara does sound a bit uncongenial - even for the very wealthy - like your good self I am sure

funny thing about theaters, is that i love all theaters vintage to modern. My complaint stems from the fact that a theater with 14 screens is more likely to have a movie in stock much longer then a move with 4 screens. If i wait two weeks to see something, chances are i will miss out unless i drive 2 hours to the north or to the south.

Not downing on the anti-warehouse stores and i would move to the UK in a heart beat.

Two hours driving! Blimey!
And here's me complaining about a half hour bus ride!

When I was a nipper one of the local fleapits was really fab - all 1930's half-timbered tudorbethan with stained glass windows, pretend flickering torches on the walls and double seats for the courting couples at the back,Aaaah!

It got knocked down for a Macdonalds.

I'm not sure "we" are all against hypermarkets and malls in Britain. I detest the places the soulless and indistinguishable places, but locations like Bluewater and Thurrock are pilgrimage sites for many.

Keeps 'em all in one place, I suppose.
