Hmm, this could be interesting... ceraintly challenging for me, since most of the characters I consider my 'favourites' are more anti-heroes than heroes anyway (Constantine, Preacher, The Crow)... One possibility that pops in my head, though not sure yet how doable it will be, is to do Dream of the Endless as the Lord of Nightmares. Would this be acceptable?

Just making sure. I have only a a few books (since I normally didn't like the artwork) and the names sort of slide over my consciousness.
